Global wafer factory production capacity from 2022 to 2027
What is the difference in production capacity between 8 inches and 12 inches? Currently, 12 inches is the top priority in the entire semiconductor industry, with an expected average compound growth rate (CAGR) of 7.4% from 2022 to 2027, while the 8-inch annual compound growth rate during the same period is only 1.4%.
The main reason for this is that many semiconductor equipment factories no longer produce 8-inch devices. Currently, only second-hand 8-inch devices are circulating in the market, and there are even some OEM factories that choose to build 12-inch factories to expand production capacity, but still use 8-inch technology.
Perhaps everyone may think that advanced process chips account for a high proportion of the entire semiconductor industry, possibly reaching 40-50%. In fact, between 2022 and 2027, the ratio of advanced and mature processes remained at a level of 3:7. Although the quantity of the two will continue to increase, the proportion of the two will not change much.
Let's look at the number of films cast in various regions around the world. It can be seen that the proportion of Taiwan, China in 2027 will decrease, mainly due to the overseas expansion of foundry plants such as TSMC; Chinese Mainland is dominated by mature processes, whose proportion will rise from 24% in 2022 to 28% in 2027.
