Q2 global semiconductor revenue increased by $4.6 billion in the quarter
According to the latest semiconductor industry competition tracking report from Omdia, a market research firm, the semiconductor industry has reversed its trend and resumed revenue growth in the second quarter of 2023 after five consecutive quarters of revenue decline. Among the top ten semiconductor companies with global revenue, although only three have resumed growth in the second quarter of 2023 compared to the same period in 2022, two have not resumed revenue growth compared to the first quarter of 2022.
Research indicates that quarterly revenue increased by 3.8% to $124.3 billion. This growth is consistent with the historical pattern of the entire semiconductor market, with revenue increasing by an average of 3.4% in the second quarter compared to the first quarter (using data from 2002 to 2022). However, the growth of the semiconductor industry continues to deviate from historical trends. For example, the DRAM market grew by 15% in the second quarter, while the historical pattern in the second quarter was 7.5%.
After experiencing the longest semiconductor downturn since 2002, the current revenue growth signal is a welcome signal for the semiconductor industry. In the second quarter of 2023, the top ten semiconductor companies in terms of revenue were Intel, Samsung, NVIDIA, Qualcomm, Broadcom, SK Hynix, AMD, Infineon, Alpha Semiconductor, and Texas Instruments. In terms of annual growth, only NVIDIA, Infineon, and Italian Semiconductor have achieved their goals. As for quarterly growth, Qualcomm and Broadcom are still in a state of decline.
Among the top ten semiconductor companies in the second quarter of 2023, NVIDIA can be said to have led the semiconductor industry in turning losses into profits. From the perspective of the entire semiconductor industry, revenue increased by $4.6 billion compared to the first quarter, of which $2.5 billion was contributed by NVIDIA. In the generative AI market led by NVIDIA, the recent rapid growth in demand has driven its market share ranking.
In addition, the report points out that driven by the entry of artificial intelligence chips into the server market, the revenue of the data processing field has grown by 15% in the quarter, accounting for nearly one-third of the overall semiconductor industry revenue. The wireless communication market, mainly dominated by the smartphone market, has continued to decline by 3% compared to the first quarter, despite continued weak terminal demand. As for the automotive semiconductor market, it continues to grow, with a growth rate of 3.2%.
