Top 10 wafer foundries account for 90% of the global market share
TSMC, Samsung, Unicom, Groside and SMIC International led the growth of the global wafer foundry market in the third quarter of 2022. Calculated by revenue, the total revenue of these five companies accounts for 89.6% of the global wafer foundry market. In the third quarter of 2022, downstream customers reduced inventory and new order activity. The details are as follows:
TSMC is the manufacturer of the main chip of Apple's new iPhone. Due to the strong inventory demand of the new iPhone, TSMC's performance in the third quarter of 2022 increased significantly, with revenue of USD 20.16 billion, up 11.1% month on month. The factors driving this growth can be attributed to the chips of TSMC's process nodes within 7nm (including 7nm). The proportion of such chips' revenue in TSMC's total revenue has been rising, reaching 54% in the third quarter of 2022.
Although Samsung also provides spare parts for the new iPhone series, the revenue of Samsung's OEM business in the third quarter of 2022 decreased slightly by 0.1% on a month on month basis, and Samsung's market share fell to 15.5% due to the sharp weakening of the Korean Won.
In the third quarter of 2022, the revenue of UPS was about 2.48 billion US dollars, up 1.3% quarter on quarter. The quarterly performance of Unicom was mainly affected by the boost factors brought by the stronger US dollar and the new 28nm capacity.
Grofand's quarterly revenue increased 4.1% to about $2.07 billion. This growth is attributed to the quarter on quarter growth of wafer shipments, as well as the further optimization of wafer ASP (average selling price) and product portfolio. In addition, Grofand has always maintained a capacity utilization rate of more than 90%.
SMIC's revenue in the third quarter of 2022 will be about 1.91 billion US dollars, a slight increase of 0.2% quarter on quarter. SMIC's product portfolio is biased towards consumer electronics chips, so the company's performance in the third quarter was flat. Nevertheless, thanks to the optimization of wafer ASP, which offset the impact of the decline in product portfolio and wafer shipments, SMIC's revenue in the third quarter of 2022 is still rising.
