The total global semiconductor equipment sales in 2022 will be US$114 billion
Total OEM sales are expected to reach $103 billion in 2021, a 44.7% jump from the industry record of $71 billion in 2020, according to SEMI's year-end total semiconductor equipment forecast. The global semiconductor equipment market will expand to $114 billion by 2022.
Ajit Manocha, President and CEO of SEMI, said: "Total semiconductor manufacturing equipment sales surpassing the $100 billion mark reflects the global semiconductor industry's consistent and extraordinary drive to expand capacity to meet strong demand. Continued investment in long-term trends across multiple end markets will drive healthy growth in 2022."
According to reports, the foundry and logic segment accounts for more than half of total fab equipment sales, and will grow 50% year-on-year to $49.3 billion in 2021, driven by demand for cutting-edge and mature nodes. Growth momentum is expected to continue in 2022, with 17% growth in foundry and logic equipment investment. Both front-end (fab) and back-end (assembly/package and test) semiconductor equipment segments are contributing to global expansion. The fab equipment segment, which includes wafer processing, fab facilities, and mask/reticle equipment, is projected to grow 43.8% in 2021 to a new industry record of $88 billion and 12.4% in 2022 to reach approximately $99 billion. Fab equipment is expected to decline slightly -0.5% to $98.4 billion in 2023.
The agency noted that strong business and consumer demand for memory and storage has driven growth in spending on DRAM and NAND equipment.
They noted that the DRAM equipment segment leads the expansion in 2021, surging 52% to $15.1 billion and rising 1% to $15.3 billion in 2022. The NAND equipment market is expected to grow 24% to $19.2 billion in 2021 and 8% to $20.6 billion in 2022. Spending on DRAM and NAND is expected to decline by -2% and -3%, respectively, in 2023.
After a strong 33.8% growth in 2020, the assembly and packaging equipment segment is expected to surge 81.7% in 2021 to reach $7 billion. It will grow another 4.4% in 2022. The semiconductor test equipment market is expected to grow 29.6% in 2021 to reach $7.8 billion; and will continue to grow 4.9% in 2022 to meet demand for 5G and high-performance computing (HPC) applications.
Regionally, China, South Korea and Taiwan are expected to be the top three regions for equipment spending in 2021. China is expected to remain in the No. 1 position in 2021, while Taiwan is expected to return to No. 1 in 2022 and 2023. Equipment spending is expected to grow in all regions in 2021 and 2022.
